Céline Zuretti research in the history of technology focuses on the large-scale modernization enterprise organized by Lord Shimazu Nariakira in the Satsuma domain at the end of the Edo period (19th century). His innovative approach was based on education, technical innovation in all fields of production (agricultural, crafts and industrial) and the modernisation of the military forces according to the Western model.

FFJ/Christian Polak Prize winner

Céline Zuretti received the 2017 FFJ/Christian Polak Prize for her report entitled « L'Émergence de la verrerie au Japon à la période d'Edo. Les dynamiques des transferts de technologies et de connaissances entre Occidentaux, rangakusha et artisans » (The Emergence of Glassmaking in Japan in the Edo Period. The dynamics of technology and knowledge transfer between Westerners, rangakusha and craftsmen).
